    Historically the sole solution available for fluorescence calibration was…fluorescent solutions. Only carefully-prepared liquid standards could be relied on to faithfully reproduce optical properties like absorption and emission maxima, lifetime, or quantum yield. This was the labor-intensive but fundamentally reliable way to tune a scientific instrument for quantitative analysis.

  • The New Way

    But then in 2020, something new: A novel material platform called SMILES that reproduces liquid fluorescence properties in solids. Because of this, SMILES can be made into calibration standards for any color, with any desired optical parameters, often using the same dye as the solution-based calibration target. And because they are solids, SMILES can take on any form factor to match any instrument.

    Because of this faithful reproduction of liquid properties, SMILES make reliable calibration tools. Better yet, SMILES can be stored, reused, and mass produced, so calibration can be quick, easy, and scalable.
